Three Minute Philosophy
When first approaching this piece for the Scottish Flute Trio the original intention was to create a work where the three flutes and percussion are treated as the almost a single instrument – not unlike some nasty onemanbandmachine – thereby hopefully avoiding any overtly pastoral references . During the process of writing I began to wonder why when anyone writes anything for the classical stage that involves tonality, syncopation or repetition it is immediately described as being minimalistically influenced .As all composers who run the gauntlet of cultural amnesia will understand, attempting to reconciliate what one listens to, and what one writes seems to be getting harder these days.
Three Minute Philosophy was commissioned by the Scottish Flute Trio with a financial subsidy from the Scottish Arts Council and was premiered by them with Tim Williams on percussion at the Lemon Tree Aberdeen in November this year. The title is self explanatory, unlike this programme note.
