Upbeat Destroyer for guitar and ensemble plays on the expectation of metre and bar lines. In other words, although mainly in four it plays around with irrational groupings to create an unsteady balance.
Things are pulled and elongated or rushed to create a work happy to fit in what it can wherever it seems possible, much like the fourth beat of an inebriated dance. Upbeat Destroyer was commissioned by Tom Kerstens and the Bath International Guitar Festival with a financial subsidy from South West Arts.
